History and Tradition
The Scottish Highlander, symbolic of Integrity, Loyalty and Courage
is our mascot. Carlmont's colors are royal blue and silver gray.
The Carlmont campus was built on 42 acres at a cost of $2.5 million. In the Fall of 1952, Carlmont began as a "school within a school" at Sequoia High School, with four hundred fifty freshmen and sophomore students. It was not until April 19, 1953 that Carlmont High School was dedicated to Truth - Liberty - Toleration. On the following morning our students arrived by bus caravan from Sequoia to occupy this modern high school facility.
Today, Carlmont's student body consists of approximately 2,030 young men and women, each of whom has a share in the history and tradition which is Carlmont High School. Today's Carlmont enrollment is made up of a diverse ethnic population which lives in the communities of Belmont, San Carlos, Redwood Shores, and East Palo Alto. Carlmont's population, when it opened in 1953 was 450. The student population has fluctuated reaching its maximum of 2,334 students in 1969. Carlmont has issued over 20,000 graduation diplomas. CHS is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Carlmont proudly received the distinction of being honored as a California Distinguished High School in 1988 and 1990. Carlmont is part of the Sequoia Union High School District with 8,000+ students..
Carlmont has 92 full-time equivalent teachers, 9 part-time equivalent teachers, 4 administrators, 40 classified staff members, a librarian, a school psychologist, a College & Career Center and Work Experiences specialists, as well as Carlmont Motivational Center (CMC), an after-school tutoring and activities program. Students have the opportunity to enroll in college classes - Middle College, in cooperation with Cañada College, and they receive college transferable credits. All staff are teaching in their major or minor field of training.
Carlmont is celebrating its 53rd year of education excellence this year.
GROUNDBREAKING
On Monday, April 27, 1998 Delaine Eastin, California State Superintendent
of Public Instruction, and a Carlmont Class of '65 graduate, participated
in a Groundbreaking Ceremony for two new wings at Carlmont High School.
Construction is completed on a new 2-story A-Wing Science Building which
adds six classrooms. A new 2-story Student Center, in front of the Library,
provides a centralized location for students to visit the A.S.B. office,
Treasurer, and Attendance office. Three additional classrooms and a
Faculty Lounge are located on the second floor. Measure V is providing
funding for these projects.
NEW
FOOTBALL FIELD & SWIMMING POOL
A beautiful new All-Weather Track and Field was opened during the Spring
of 2003, and a new Swimming Pool was opened in June 2003.
D &
E-Wings (closest to Student Union, Chimney Corrners)
In September 2003, the D & E-Wings, closest to the Student Union,
Chimney Corners, were torn down to make way for two new wings which
will expand our classroom capacity by 23 classrooms. Classrooms located
in these wings are now located in Portables
opposite T and & U-Wings. The new classrooms will open in late-Spring
of 2005. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on April 14, 2005, during
Open House, and visitors were offered a guided tour of the two new wings.
The campus will experience modernization over the next two years.
